How we did this study
Before rebuilding this website, we studied 155 recorded calls that renters made to porta potty companies across the U.S. — mostly in Texas, California, Ohio and Minnesota. These were not calls to Walter Rental Works; they show how renters shop and what goes wrong. We removed every name, phone number and address. For each call we tagged the reason for calling, the questions asked, the timing requested, and what made the caller book or hang up. A call could count in more than one topic.
What do people renting a porta potty ask first?
Nearly half of renters — 74 of 155 calls, or 48% — opened with the price. Callers asked "How much is a porta potty?" before giving a date, an address or a head count. Renters want a number in the first minute, which is why every quote we give is one all-in total.
| Call topic | Calls | Share of 155 |
|---|---|---|
| Event or party | 82 | 53% |
| Asked price first | 74 | 48% |
| Delivery or pickup timing | 73 | 47% |
| Weekend scheduling | 72 | 46% |
| Placement, gate or driveway | 48 | 31% |
| Same-day or next-day needed | 32 | 21% |
| Construction jobsite | 26 | 17% |
| A month or longer | 27 | 17% |
| Handwashing or a sink | 25 | 16% |
| Restroom trailer | 15 | 10% |
| Home remodel or project | 13 | 8% |
| Wheelchair-accessible unit | 9 | 6% |
How far ahead do people book a porta potty?
Most event renters book late. About 40% of event callers phoned less than a week before the party, and the median lead time was roughly 10 to 14 days. Weddings were the exception: restroom trailer requests came 6 weeks to more than a year ahead. Construction callers almost always wanted delivery within 0 to 7 days.
What frustrated callers most?
The biggest frustration was not the base price. Callers objected to fees that appeared after the first number: fuel surcharges near $35, 3% credit card fees, removal fees at pickup, and same-day "emergency" fees as high as $227. Other common frustrations were long holds, reaching a national call center instead of a local company, and paying a full 28-day month for a 3-day job.
What reassured callers?
- Hearing one all-in total, including delivery and pickup.
- Learning that weekend units arrive Friday and leave Monday at no extra cost.
- Knowing they did not have to be home or clean the unit before pickup.
- Getting a written quote to show a spouse, boss or board.
- Talking to someone local who knew the area.
What we changed because of the calls
We dropped fuel, card and removal fees entirely. We made same-day delivery free of any rush fee when you call by noon within about 17 miles of our yard. We made the last cycle of a monthly rental charge by the week instead of a full 28 days. And we wrote every FAQ on this site in the words callers actually used — see the 110+ question FAQ.
Questions readers ask
Were these calls all from Milwaukee?
No. The recordings came from porta potty rental calls across many U.S. markets. We use them for patterns in what renters ask, not for local prices.
How was personal information handled?
Names, phone numbers, emails, card data and addresses were removed before analysis, and none appear on this site.
Will you update this study?
Yes. We plan to repeat the review with our own Milwaukee calls and publish the comparison.
