What makes a porta potty wheelchair accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor at ground level with no step, a door about 36 inches wide, grab bars beside the toilet, and enough floor for a 60-inch-diameter turning circle (or a T-shaped turning space) under the 2010 ADA Standards. A wheelchair-accessible porta potty is about twice as wide as a standard unit.

About the term "ADA-compliant." People search for "ADA porta potty," and we use that phrase so you can find this page. We call the unit wheelchair-accessible because compliance depends on the whole site — the path, the ground and the slope — not the unit alone. Confirm requirements with your permit office or venue.
The rule

How many accessible porta potties does my event need?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2, at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than 1. That means 1 accessible unit for clusters of 1–20 units and 2 accessible units for 21–40 units. The accessible units count toward your total.

Units in the clusterAccessible units required (legal minimum)Our recommendation
1–2011, placed nearest the parking
21–4022, one at each end of the row
41–6033, plus a hard path to each

Source: 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, §213.2 (U.S. Access Board). This is the legal minimum; it is not legal advice. Private backyard parties are not covered by the ADA, but if a guest uses a wheelchair or walker, rent one anyway.

From the U.S. call study: 6% of the calls in our U.S. call study asked for an accessible unit. Most were family events where one relative uses a wheelchair: "My relative uses a wheelchair — will she be able to get into a standard one?" The answer is no: the standard unit has a step and a 24-inch door. Rent one accessible unit for that guest.

Placement

Where should an accessible unit be placed?

Place an accessible porta potty on firm, level ground — pavement, packed gravel or a mat over grass — on the shortest route from parking or the main seating area. An accessible porta potty on soft grass or a slope defeats the purpose, because a wheelchair cannot roll to the door.

  • Keep a 5-foot-wide clear path to the door.
  • Set the door facing the path, not a wall or a fence.
  • Need about 8 × 8 feet of level space for the unit.
  • In winter, keep the path clear of snow and ice.

Wheelchair-accessible unit: questions from real calls

Do you have handicap-accessible units?

Yes. Our wheelchair-accessible units have a ground-level floor, a 36-inch door, grab bars and a 60-inch turning space. Same-day delivery is available when you call by noon.

Is this one ADA compliant?

The unit is built to the ADA Standards' dimensions for accessible portable toilets. Whether your event setup complies also depends on the path, ground and slope, so confirm with your permit office.

If we decide we need a handicap one later, is it just a slight upcharge?

Yes. You can swap a standard unit for an accessible unit any time before delivery. The quote updates with the difference; there is no change fee.

Can an accessible unit go in my backyard?

Only if there is a level spot about 8 by 8 feet and the crew can roll it there. Narrow side yards usually do not fit; the driveway often works better.

Are accessible units good for strollers and parents with kids?

Yes. The extra floor space fits a stroller or a parent helping a small child, which is why many family events rent one even without a wheelchair user.
