The problem

Do porta potties freeze in a Milwaukee winter?

A porta potty freezes when the blue water in the tank drops below about 32°F. In Milwaukee, NOAA normals show a January average low of 17.2°F and about 123 nights a year at or below 32°F. A winterized porta potty uses non-toxic antifreeze or brine in the tank so it keeps working on those nights.

What we do

How do you winterize a porta potty?

Winterizing a porta potty takes 3 changes: non-toxic antifreeze or salt brine goes into the waste tank, water sinks are swapped for freestanding sanitizer, and a flushing unit's fresh-water tank is filled with antifreeze solution. Each weekly service re-adds antifreeze because pumping removes it.

  1. Antifreeze charge Non-toxic antifreeze or brine in the tank at delivery and every service.
  2. No water sinks Handwashing stations swap to sanitizer stands; deluxe sinks are shut off.
  3. Placement for sun South-facing, out of drifting snow, near a plowed edge.
  4. Your part Keep a path shoveled and the door clear of ice.
Milwaukee street rule: The City of Milwaukee bans containers on open streets and alleys from Dec. 1 to Mar. 1, partly for snow plowing. Winter units go on driveways and private lots.
Heat

Do you rent heated porta potties?

We do not rent heated single porta potties. For winter events where comfort matters, a climate-controlled restroom trailer (heated models on request) is the warm option when the site has a 110V outlet. For winter jobsites, a winterized standard unit placed out of the wind is the practical choice.

Winter jobsite starting?

We winterize before it leaves the yard. Same rate as summer.

Winter rentals: questions callers ask

Will a porta potty freeze if it is 0°F?

The antifreeze mix we use keeps the tank liquid well below normal Milwaukee lows. On the roughly 18 nights a year at 0°F or below, we add extra at the next service.

Does winterizing cost extra?

No. Antifreeze is included from mid-October to late April at the same rate as summer.

Can you service a unit buried in snow?

We need a path. If the driver cannot reach the door, the visit is rescheduled for the next day. Please shovel a 4-foot path.

Do handwashing stations work in winter?

Not outdoors. Water stations freeze, so we swap them for sanitizer stands unless the station is inside a heated space.

Can I rent a porta potty for an ice-fishing or winter event?

Yes. Standard winterized units work for winter events. Tell us if the spot is on a frozen lake or field so we plan access.
