Renting a Porta Potty for a Milwaukee Block Party

By Walter, owner of Walter Rental Works. Published and reviewed October 7, 2026.

Short answer. A Milwaukee block party needs a City DPW block party permit filed at least 2 weeks ahead with a majority neighbor petition. Plan 1 porta potty per 50 guests for 4 hours, place it on a driveway or inside the closed block, and book it when you file the permit.

What permit does a Milwaukee block party need?

A Milwaukee block party needs a block party permit from the Department of Public Works, filed online at least 2 weeks before the date. The application is reviewed by the district alderperson, DPW and the Milwaukee Police Department, and a majority of residents on the block must sign the petition. Residents receive barricades at no cost; a $50 late fee applies to late applications.

How many porta potties does a block party need?

A block party needs 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for an event up to 4 hours, and 1 per 40 guests for 5 to 8 hours. Add 1 unit if beer or wine is served. A 120-person, 6-hour block party with a beer table needs 4 units.

Where should the unit go on a closed street?

  • On a neighbor's driveway near the middle of the block is best — no extra permit, off the street.
  • Inside the closed section, at the curb, at least a car length from the barricades so emergency access stays open.
  • Never in front of a fire hydrant or blocking a driveway someone needs.
  • Facing the sidewalk, not the party, for privacy.

When should I book?

Book the porta potty the same day you file the permit. Summer weekends in Milwaukee overlap with Summerfest, State Fair and dozens of other block parties, so units go fast. We deliver Friday and pick up Monday, so the unit is there before anyone sets up a grill.

Questions readers ask

Do I need a separate permit for the porta potty?

Not if it sits on a driveway or inside your permitted closed block. Outside the closed area, the City public-way rules apply.

Can businesses or churches host block parties?

The City says block parties are for neighborhood fellowship by residents; businesses and nonprofits use the special event permit and pay event fees.

Who pays — can neighbors split it?

Yes. We send one invoice link that any neighbor can pay, and a receipt everyone can see.
